In the Jungle
Going from a city up 2,000 meters to a hill station definitely does something to the sinuses.
I was woken up at 9:30 am by the neighbor with Rasheed on the phone asking if I want breakfast. I think I was literally sleepwalking…
I said, “No, I’m fine. Thank you. I went to sleep and woke up at 3pm because my sinuses were so bad
Manju came over and he asked if I had eaten anything. I had no phone signal, which was good because I wanted to do a Phone Detox.
He gave me the phone and Racheed said, "The neighbor is going to make you some food just give her some money."
I was absolutely thrilled because that meant "super homemade food from the source."
I took my shower with a bucket and cool water…Something about the bucket showers just hit different…
I was about to fall back asleep after my shower and heard kids shouting outside. It was the neighbor walking down the hill to my door with her two kids carrying a big pot of homemade dhal with chapati..heaven!
She made food for me a couple other times and she would apologize because it is not very good and I told her "it was the best food." She was so shy and reserved. She would walk her kids to school and pick them up everyday. I saw them walking back and they were all so happy. The whole village knew one another and I ended up knowing her close friend and her son.
Her son was absolutely adorable. He was 12 years old and he would talk to me while I was on my walks. He was in his house, which was off the path near the rice fields.
"What are you doing today, How is your mom doing? Did you do your homework?"
He says, "When will you go to USA?" Can you bring me with you?"
It just does not translate how beautiful and culturally RICH these moments truly were....
This was a village inside a Jungle but ….The higher the altitude, the closer to God.
I spent time with this family across from me... Rasheed said that she really likes you, but how do you communicate? She doesn't speak English.
I always find a way and it is just the beauty of traveling and learning to communicate in special ways...She said that elephants do come to the houses. I was really despera
Oh being in the jungle for 5 days...playing futbol with local kids, finding a local restaurant to eat some amazing local food, hiking, yoga, writing, and peace.
To this beautiful family at the top of the hill in a cement house with no windows or doors....I hope one day you won't have to keep staring down at the beautiful house....you will open your door and someone will hand you the keys. You deserve it. Life needs to reward beautiful Indians like yourselves...
He says, "They are very poor and I say...they are very rich Rasheed....very rich."
